Délégation du Québec à Chicago
Québec’s harsh and intense climate has shaped the robust character of its construction industry and led to the development of a unique set of skills, thereby creating a sector where the talent for adapting techniques is matched only by the ability to develop innovative products and materials. This creative community dares to challenge itself, with the ultimate goal of constantly improving performance and exporting expertise. And it is this spirit of innovation and dedication to excellence that has helped cement its reputation in Canada and around the world.
Success with twenty first century technologies and design, like interactive multimedia installations in public and private spaces, acoustically insulated storefronts and vertical walls, bird-friendly fenestration, custom adhesives and sealants as well as engineered wood, also make Quebec an interesting partner for architects, engineers, environmental designers, and other parties wanting to know what’s going down as new structures go up.
In the spirit of building connections, the Delegation of Quebec Chicago and Export Quebec in partnership with the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted a day-long event on October 16, 2019 attended by local architects and Quebec innovators from the commercial building sector.
At “Quebec is Quality: Innovative & Sustainable Building Solutions from North of the Border," architects were able to participate in six sessions and earn required continuing education credits. During each presentation, company representatives from Quebec shared expertise on their particular industry niche. Presentation topics ranged from sustainably-sourced engineered wood, to bird-friendly glazing permitting structures to better blend into the natural environment, to interactive digital installations created by a design studio first started in the videogame market.
The six presentations were as follows -
• “Get Inspired! Design Smarter, Safer, and Greener with Innovation in Wood Structural Systems” by Lamco Forest Products
• “Making Sense of Sealants” by Adfast Corp.
• “Bird Friendly Building Design with Acid-etched Glass” by Walker Glass
• “Acoustic Separation using Motor Driven Operable Partitions” by Skyfold
• “Glass Partition Design” by Muraflex
• “Digital Experiences in the Built Environment” by Float4
A survey of architects following the session revealed several opportunities for the presenting companies as well as testimonials such as, “Great mix of content” and “The event made me much more knowledgeable about important new design options about Quebec’s cutting edge offerings to the building industry.” Attending architects were looking forward to the Quebec Delegation Chicago and AIA Chicago to host another learning event in the future.
