The McLarena: an interactive installation at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Teknopolis FestivalDélégation générale du Québec à New York Brooklyn, NY Saturday, February 23, 2019 to Sunday, March 10, 2019
Created by Montréal-based Daily tous les jours, the interactive installation proposes a contemporary hommage to Norman McLaren’s tongue-in-cheek approach by inviting participants to collectively reproduce the choreography from the original film. Within a recording setup, a split screen presents the character to imitate on the right and a live view of the participant on the left. Each participant imitates the previous one, hence creating a collaborative dance that constantly evolves, all the while taking on each person’s interpretations. McLarena was commissioned by Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles and the National Film Board of Canada for the McLaren Wall-to-Wall tribute, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Norman McLaren’s birth. His film Canon (1964) and his tongue-in-cheek approach serve as the inspiration and backdrop to this installation.
