The Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, Pierre Arcand, will be in the United States from February 21 to 25 on his first mission there since the unveiling of the Québec government’s U.S. Strategy. He will travel to Louisiana, Texas and Georgia, three high-growth states which account for an annual trade volume with Québec of nearly $7 billion.
Two young Québec filmmakers have been singled out for top honours, the Grand Jury and Audience awards, at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival.

On November 18, 2009, Denis Turcotte, Senior Québec Government Representative in Los Angeles was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister at Québec’s Department of International Relations and Chief of Protocol of the Government of Québec as of November 30, 2009. Mr Yanick Godbout will be Chargé d’Affaires until the appointment of a new Head of Mission.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement after Quebec, a partner in the Western Climate Initiative, announced a new ambitious target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and the introduction of a clean-car emissions standard equivalent to California’s Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions Standards:
On November 23, Premier Jean Charest and Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, Line Beauchamp, unveiled Québec’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by the year 2020. By targeting a 20% reduction below 1990 levels, Québec has set a goal similar to the target established by the European Union thus becoming the leader in the fight against climate change.
Sony Pictures is acquiring the rights to the Québec-made film De père en flic, the highest-grossing French-language film ever released in Canada. Émile Gaudreault wrote the screenplay for the movie, which will be adapted for U.S. audiences.
The Québec film industry’s discovery of the year, J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), by Xavier Dolan, screened in Hollywood on November 3 as part of the AFI FEST 2009 official competition. The film’s American premiere was held in the mythical Chinese Theatre in the presence of actors François Arnaud and Patricia Tulasne.
The film I Killed my Mother (J’ai tué ma mère) will be presented in the official competition category of the AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi, at the historic Chinese Theatre (Mann 6) on November 3rd, at 7pm. The film is in French with English subtitles.
The Premier of Québec, Jean Charest, was in Los Angeles on October 2 and 3. He met with the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to talk about climate change, where California and Québec are among the world leaders. Governor Schwarzenegger also thank Premier Charest for the role played by the pilots of the Québec Super Scoopers in fighting bush fires in the Los Angeles County.

During the opening ceremony of Climate Week NYC on September 21, Premier Jean Charest spoke on behalf of States, provinces and regions in order to emphasize their concrete and crucial contribution in reducing greenhouse gases emissions. The ceremony was presided over by former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair and attended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon as well as government and business representatives.
This year, the Québec Government Office in Berlin is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In fact, it was a Cultural Agency that the Québec government first opened in the German capital in 1999. This Agency later became an Office reporting to the Québec Government Office in Munich. Since then, Québec’s representation in Berlin has continued to promote Québec in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The government of Québec is present this year again in Los Angeles County to assist the Fire Department in fighting wild fires. Since 1994, eight pilots and three mechanics have come to California with two Bombardier 415 during each fall’s windy fire season. They respond annually to roughly 75 calls, making more than 500 drops and pouring out over 800,000 gallons of water.
The Québec government recently announced the establishment of a green energy technology development assistance program funded by an $8M budget. The two-year program is intended to stimulate research and innovation, foster an increase in the number of demonstrated new green energy technologies, and contribute to company growth and job creation.
