The Québec government office in Los Angeles (DQLA) took part from April 16 to 18 in Navigating the American Carbon World (NACW), North America’s largest carbon-market event.
Gary Gero, President of Climate Action Reserve and NACW organizer, and Alain Houde, Québec Delegate in Los Angeles.
This year’s edition of the annual California conference drew about 650 experts, businesspeople, government officials and media representatives.
Cap-and-trade system
Alain Houde, Québec Delegate in Los Angeles, addressed the participants during the NACW opening session. He described Québec’s efforts to combat climate change, including a cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gas emission allowances, which came into effect on January 1, 2013.
North America’s first carbon market
The day after the end of NACW, the California Air Resources Board voted to link California's cap-and-trade program with that of Québec, setting the stage for North America’s biggest carbon market — the world’s second largest, after the European Union carbon market. This major initiative was underlined by a number of NACW participants.
A fast-growing sector
Several Québec companies took part in the event, which was an opportunity for them to expand their presence in a fast-growing sector.
The people who manned the high-profile Québec booth, located at the entrance to the conference venue, distributed Québec promotional material, highlighted the Québec representatives’ environmental expertise and answered numerous questions about the Québec and California carbon markets.
The next edition of NACW will be held in Los Angeles in April 2014.
