A record number of 35 Québec companies participated in the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the world’s largest professionals-only video game industry event. This conference, which had over 23,000 attendees, was held in San Francisco, California from March 26 to 29.
Its program featured over 400 conference sessions, round table discussions, tutorials and discussion panels, as well as a huge exhibit hall. Some ten companies were invited to be exhibitors in the Quebec Games exhibit. Its massive kiosk allowed these companies to promote their products to the video game industry’s main publishers and developers. The Quebec Games exhibit enjoyed a great deal of visibility and was perfectly suited for meeting and discussing with clients and potential partners from around the world.
In addition, over 400 people participated in Canada Game Nation, a networking activity that included Québec as one of its main partners.
An award that reflects on Québec
Just before the conference began, Cyanide Studios, a French company whose Québec subsidiary is based in Montreal, was awarded one of eight prestigious “Best in Play” awards. As a result, their Impire strategy game was given a great deal of exposure as part of the GDC’s Best in Play showcase.
The participation of the Québec companies was coordinated by the Québec Government Office in Los Angeles and Export Québec, in cooperation with Alliance numérique, the business network of Québec's new media and interactive digital content industry.
A prolific sector…
Québec’s digital entertainment industry has over 80 companies that specialize in game development, publishing, production services, software and middleware. They employ 7,000 people, not counting the many spin-off jobs they generate.
