War Witch created by Montreal-based filmmaker Kim Nguyen has earned a nomination for best international film at the Independant Spirit Awards.
The film paints a poignant and harrowing portrait of Komona, a 14-year-old girl (wonderfully played by nonprofessional actress Rachel Mwanza) who has been kidnapped from her African village by rebels to become a child soldier.
War Witch was also chosen as Canada’s submission for foreign-language Oscar consideration. It has been widely praised on the international circuit. It won best actress and best narrative film awards at the Tribeca Film Festival and a Silver Bear for best actress as well as an ecumenical prize at the Berlin Film Festival.
