Using her body as an archaeological site, Dana Michel digs for her most intimate childhood memories. After spells in sultry Berlin clubs and sizzling Jamaican dance halls, Michel analyses her cultural roots at a sexual level, examining her identity with uncommon imagination, humour and daring. In 2017 that outsider's gaze was awarded a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale.

As a child, Dana Michel wrapped a yellow towel around her head, trying to look like the blonde girls at her school. Reaching back in time, she now delves into the imaginary world of her youthful alter ego. Yellow Towel is a ritual performance, averse to self-censorship. With a mix of seriousness and absurdity, Michel digs into the stereotypes that exist around ‘black culture’, and explores the extent to which she can identify with them.
